Vlad Koulikov

As you might have guessed, I’m Russian. Some kids get into martial arts because their parents want them to train for various reasons—being bullied, improving focus, and gaining discipline to name a few. That was not the case with me. My older cousin and my dad were my inspiration.

What is BJJ?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a combat art and grappling sport developed in Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century. It’s commonly referred to as “Gracie jiu-jitsu” because two Gracie brothers, Carlos and Helio, pioneered its development. Maeda, a Japanese judo fighter, taught the fundamental concepts to Carlos Gracie. Helio added techniques applying leverage, which could be used by a smaller person to defeat a bigger and stronger person.

Original Gracie jiu-jitsu focused on self-defense. However, modern Brazilian jiu-jitsu is more of a competitive sport. In contrast to judo in which the match can be ended by a throw, pin, or submission, to win a BJJ match prior to the expiration of time, one must win by submission. "Newaza" (the judo term for ground techniques) is extremely developed because the majority of the match is spent on the mat. Over the years BJJ proved itself an effective self-defense style as well as a great addition any mixed martial art (MMA) fighter's skill set. In fact, to be successful in MMA, a fighter must be trained in submission techniques.

Grappling

Submission grappling  (or submission wrestling) is a form of competition that focus on throws, take downs and maneuvers on the mat. The goal is to make your opponent surrender by using a submission hold (wrist or arm lock, leg lock, strangle). The term "submission grappling" usually refers only to the form of competition and training that does not use a gi or a jacket.

The sport of submission wrestling brings together techniques from catch wrestling, folk wrestling, judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and sambo. Submission grappling  is an element of mixed martial arts (MMA).  Submission wrestlers or grapplers usually wear shorts and rash guards. That changes the way grips are applied as opposed to wearing a gi. It’s an exciting and fast paced sport that’s growing rapidly.
